Sir Hardy Amies was born Edwin Amies in London and in his teens, he adopted his mother’s maiden name, Hardy and always cited her as the inspiration for moving into the fashion world. Whilst he was in his first job in fashion, her wrote a vivid description of a dress which brought Hardy to the attention of the owner of the Mayfair couture house Lachasse in London. He became the managing director at the young age of 25. By the late 1930s, Hardy was designing the entire Lachasse collection.
Amies is best known for designing clothes for Queen Elizabeth II. The association began in 1950, when he made several outfits for the then Princess Elizabeth’s royal tour to Canada.
He continued to design clothes and in 1967, Amies was commissioned by Stanley Kubrick to design the costumes for his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This trend continues as Amies’ work was seen in a handful of other films.
One of his best known creations was the gown he designed for Queen Elizabeth II for her Silver Jubilee portrait in 1977, which he said would be forever remembered on a thousand biscuit tins..
